Our vision is that everyone should have the comforts of home. We value: Being Kind - Everyone being seen - The Human Spirit - Comfort and safety of a home - Community partnerships.
Furnishing Dignity was co-founded by Joyce Petrowski and Anita Buckel in 2014. The founders realized that even though existing nonprofits could stabilize homeless individuals and families, and youth aging out of foster care, by providing temporary shelter and case management services, when it came time for people to transition from temporary shelter or a foster home into a home of their own they did not possess the essential items to furnish a home. Therefore, Furnishing Dignity was started to fill that gap.
The “Dignity” approach is to address basic, fundamental human needs through personalized service. Helping an individual or family furnish a home at no cost to them enables all parties involved to more quickly create a home environment of safety, security, and comfort. Children need their own space, their own bed, a table for family dinners, and a place to successfully complete homework projects. Furnishing Dignity provides those things. Not only does this create that environment of safety, security and comfort, but it affords the individual or family the opportunity to focus on more pressing issues, such as securing and/or maintaining employment, addressing any existing health issues, and enrolling children in school or daycare, which all contribute to successful transition to positive, productive community members. Most importantly, Furnishing Dignity services promote economic mobility which contributes to an individual’s and/or family’s self-sufficiency.
