THE OAKS FAMILY
Just like all parents we dreamed for a healthy and happy child and in 1997 we thought that our wish had been granted with the birth of our daughter Katlyn. Little did we know that 10 years later in 2007 life would change as we knew it. Katlyn, who had been sick already on and off since she was born would be transferred to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where she would receive the diagnosis of Mitochondrial Disease for her 10th birthday. Mitochondrial Disease is a chronic, genetic disorder that occurs when the mitochondria of the cell fails to produce enough energy for cell or organ function.
During this hospitalization my husband and I stayed at The Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House. This was my husband’s first experience with the House but for me it was almost like stepping back in time. I remembered the warm and welcoming environment that I had experienced back in 1988 when my sister was undergoing treatment at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for brain cancer. It brought back memories of my mom meeting another mother from Las Vegas while in the kitchen and they have been best friends til this day.
As time passed and Katlyn continues her medical journey, our family’s relationship with the House has changed. We have built our own memories and relationships there. The LA House has become our home and its staff and other families are like an extended family. We have been able to experience joyful moments as well as share in the sadness that the loss of a child brings.
That is just a short introduction to one of our amazing families. The impact that Katlyn has had on the House is indescribable, this now 17 year old young lady has raised over $125,000 for the House through our Walk for Kids event. Along with the support and help from her parents Ruth & James, Katlyn has been the top fundraiser the past 3 years. Her willingness to share her story has allowed her to support other families walking the same path as her family.
Thank you for your support!
