Tilonia, a village in rural Rajasthan, is home of the Barefoot College. Since 1972, the College has worked to improve the lives of the rural poor by addressing basic needs for water, electricity, housing, health, education and income. Today, women from more than 70 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America have been trained by the College to solar electrify their own communities.
Since 2003, in partnership with the US-based, Friends of Tilonia, the artisan enterprise Hatheli Sansthan has operated the online enterprise www.tilonia.com for the sale and marketing of the Tilonia® product line of handcrafted, artisan-produced home textiles, women's accessories and gifts.
Nearly 400 artisans earn supplemental income through sewing, needlework, embroidery, tie-dying, block printing and weaving. Designs and production methods draw on Indian craft traditions that are centuries old - but create modern opportunities for these rural women and men.
