The Friends of Rouge Park was founded in January 2002 out of concern for Detroit's largest park. Its mission is to advocate for the protection and enhancement of the natural features and habitats found in Rouge Park and to promote existing activities and facilities and appropriate development of future recreational activities.
Friends of Rouge Park is a coalition of neighborhood associations surrounding the park, park user groups and individuals who care about the park. We hold an annual cleanup in spring and a butterfly walk in summer and partner with the City of Detroit, Greening of Detroit, Lawrence Tech University, Friends of the Rouge, National Park Service, Student Conservation Association and others to improve the park and protect and highlight the natural beauty that draws people.
Member organizations include Far West Detroit Civic Association, West Outer Drive Civic Association, Detroit AeroModelers, Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Association, Friends of the Rouge and others. We meet monthly on the third Tuesday at 6 pm at Westside Christian Academy.
