HELP US END FAMILY DETENTION AT BERKS
Organized by: Bridget Cambria
FREE THEM ALL - SUPPORT BERKS FAMILIES
In 2014, the United States government began engaging in a policy of indefinitely detaining families in immigration detention. These are mostly women and children fleeing horrific gender, child and sexual violence in the Northern Triangle.
Even though Berks is not licensed to care for children, it is the oldest family detention center in the nation holding refugee children accompanied by their parents. It is currently holding vulnerable children and their mothers for almost two years. This no release policy for mothers and children fails to recognize the horrific effects detention has on children and victims of trauma.
As a result, many mothers and their young children suffer family separation, arbitrary transfers to execute unlawful removals, false accusations of child abuse leading to severe depression, children are forced to share their space, sleep and shower with unrelated adults. All of this while fighting extremely difficult legal cases.
Your donations will help us provide essential services to these families, including:
- legal representation: filing fees, office supplies, internet hotspot... and a lot of coffee. Currently all of these expenses are covered by volunteers, out of pocket.
- volunteer support: we have long term volunteers who help us on the ground with everything from intakes to direct services. Your donations help us provide their housing and transportation expenses.
- post release assistance: airfare, lodging, suitcases, whatever it takes to get families home!!
This is a direct to organizer fundraiser.
