As many of you may know, our dear friend Tobi Klonecki lost her 4 year battle with breast cancer on May 7th, 2013 at the young age of 42. She left behind an adoring husband, and two wonderful little boys. We can honestly say that we’ve never met another woman like Tobi. In the face of her terminal diagnosis, she lived her life with a positive outlook; never forgetting to recognize a friend’s birthday, anniversary or special accomplishment; always planning the next fun adventure to Loon Mountain or Cape Cod. She worked tirelessly to keep her boys lives consistent, normal, and happy. She wanted the most out of her life, and she wanted the most out of life for everyone else too. She never held back her loving emotions; every voicemail ended in an “I love you” and every text message closed with a string of “xo’s”.
After receiving her diagnosis, she became very involved with support groups and research geared toward young women diagnosed with metastatic cancer. She attended a number of conferences, and remained connected with many of the women that she met while at these educational opportunities. We recall her sharing how fortunate she felt to have access to cutting edge information, which translated into potential options for her disease. Additionally, she felt blessed that her husband, extended family and friends could provide day-to-day support for her family (childcare, grocery shopping, meal preparation, home cleaning services) so she could concentrate on her fight. She wanted all women in a similar situation to have the same support she experienced.
Following her death her husband, Tom, started a foundation called Forward4Tobi. The vision is to make the lives of cancer patients and their families easier by reducing their financial burden, so they can focus all of their energy on fighting this disease and living life. Forward4Tobi raises money to provide financial assistance for medical expenses (some not covered by insurance), childcare, and other unmet needs of young cancer patients with families.
In an effort to support this organization, we have recruited 18 friends to run the Chicago Marathon in October 2015. We hope to raise $50,000 as a group. With this letter, I am asking for your help towards this goal. We have always loved to run, and want to support our friend’s wishes while doing so. Please visit the site http://www.crowdrise.com/forward4tobi and make a donation today. We promise you it will help someone just like our friend, Tobi. All proceeds go directly to the foundation. Thank you, and we hope you can watch the race. We’ll be the ones in all pink!
