BENEFITING: The Fortune Society
ORGANIZER: The Fortune Society
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
At my age, running is a challenge, but I don’t just run for me. I run for those who can’t -- it’s my way of giving something to the world. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I train with Back On My Feet, a non-profit organization that fights homelessness through running. They keep me in tip-top shape. I’m not as young as everybody else, but my motivation is to finish. I don’t try to burn myself out.
When I ran in the NYC Marathon last year, it took me over seven hours to complete it. This year, I hope to cut my time down. But regardless of how the cookie crumbles, I will finish.
Running makes me feel good, and gives me space to think. I think about all kinds of things: history, politics, inventions -- running gives me the freedom to think about everything.
I was introduced to the criminal justice system at a young age, but I’ve always known that I’m not a bad person. That’s why I’m honored to run on behalf of The Fortune Society. They’ve become an asset and resource for me for whatever I’d want to do in life. I may not be a “spring chicken” anymore, but I know that I have options, and I have space to see which of those options may be most comfortable for me.
Support me on my journey: Help me raise $3,250 to strengthen Fortune’s services for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. Your contribution will help others see the freedom they have to soar -- just like me.
