Shelter Of Hope: Helping Open People's Eyes

It has been since the Haiti earthquake that I have asked my family and friends to help raise funds. This time, I'm asking that you join with me in raising money to honor and support all the volunteers who offer up their expertise, time and heart to serve the people of San Diego and Imperial Counties.

My goal is $5,000. The deadline to give is June 7.

Here is a link to a NBC 7 San Diego interview with Gayle Falkenthal and me celebrating volunteers during National Volunteer Week

When disaster strikes, relief cannot wait. Survivors need shelter, food, water, first aid and emotional support. They need hope, help and hugs. They need the American Red Cross. The Red Cross, with its volunteer workforce, responds to a local disaster in San Diego and Imperial Counties approximately every 24 hours. Many are not aware of all Red Cross volunteers do or how frequently their neighbors in red vest are responding. Some may even take for granted that Red Cross volunteers will always be there. More often than not, regular people with jobs and familes are responding to a home fire at 2 a.m. to assist a family who just lost everything.

The Red Cross wants to Help Open People’s Eyes about the organization through the Shelter Of Hope.

In an effort to get out into the community and share the Red Cross mission, CEO Bill Earley will live in a mock shelter from June 1–June 7, 2015. He will travel throughout the county and pop up in some unexpected places. Each day will have a theme, designed to educate the community about the Red Cross, bring awareness to its role in our region, and remind San Diegans that the Red Cross is here.

Join the Shelter Of Hope Effort!

When our volunteers arrive at a disaster site, they provide shelter, food and clothes for a few nights. Those resources average about $550. This immediately sets one family squarely on the road to recover from a disaster.

When you give a little towards the $5,000 goal, you are helping provide hope to over 9 families!

Your support of the Red Cross touches many lives by providing relief for today and hope for tomorrow. Whether it’s training people to be prepared for emergencies or providing shelter to families during crisis – the Red Cross will be there because of donors like you. Thank you for helping us provide hope, help… and hugs!
