BENEFITING: FIRST DESCENTS
ORGANIZER: FIRST DESCENTS
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Hi everyone! I'm running the NYC marathon this year and raising money for a charity called first descents. First I'll tell you why I'm doing this and then why I think first descents is a worthwhile cause.
As many of you know I was diagnosed with stage 2b breast cancer in the summer of 2008. What you may not know is that early that year I tried to get into the NYC marathon but was not chosen in the lottery, a month after getting the rejection email I was diagnosed. What followed was a year of surgery, chemo, radiation and then a couple more years of hormonal blocking drugs to try and ensure the cancer did not recur. Luckily, so far it hasn't and I'll be celebrating 8 years cancer free this year! Before cancer, I was extremely active; I had run since high school, hiked and backpacked as often as I could during the summer and snowboarded during the winter. The hardest part of the cancer treatments was going from that reality to one where walking 3 blocks was a major undertaking. Losing my hair was easy, losing my strength was horrible. After finishing chemo & radiation I started running again. I was moving very slowly, but I was moving again. Ever since then, I've been working towards running the NYC marathon. This is why the NYC marathon is important to me; it's something I haven't been able to accomplish post cancer. I get to reclaim a part of myself before cancer.
There are lots of great cancer charities out there. In my work, I'm dedicated to helping find new cancer treatments. For this endeavour, I wanted to raise money for a charity that would help other cancer patients regain a portion of themselves that may have been lost. Here's a bit more about First Descents:
First Descents provides life-changing outdoor adventure programs for young adults impacted by cancer.
During the First Descents experience, young adult survivors and fighters are empowered through conquering legitimate outdoor challenges to push their limits and face their fears, and by doing so, they are able to regain the confidence and self-efficacy lost to cancer. The experience is designed to allow healing to happen naturally and organically – no forced conversations and no structured group sessions or therapy.
Each program is limited to 15 participants, ensuring individualized care, medical attention and an intimate experience with fellow survivors. First Descents programs are available to young adults with cancer regardless of their financial means. All meals, accommodations and program activities are provided free of charge, including travel scholarships, when needed.
In 2016, every single TCS New York City marathoner, supporter and volunteer can unite to contribute towards the goal of raising funds for charities across the world.
Historically, the marathon has raised a massive amount of money for charity, and our goal is to bring the entire running community come together to get involved. When you run 26.2 miles for a charity, you are not only crossing the finish line for yourself, but for so many that will be impacted by your hard work and contribution!
