The Firefighter’s Holiday Toy Drive is a not for profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to assisting underprivileged or in need children of Mohave County and surrounding areas. It is the mission of the organization to ensure that no child should be without a gift to open on Christmas morning.
Founded in 1983 by the Bullhead City Fire Department and the Bullhead Professional Firefighters Association to meet he needs of the local community. The program was started by a handful of firefighters who saw a need in their local community and banded together to purchase, wrap and hand deliver toys in the Fire Truck on Christmas eve. There was a rumor that Santa even rode along, but that has never been confirmed.
As Bullhead City continued to grow and more and more families where identified each year the program was forced to grow to meet the rising demand. It was then incorporated into the Bullhead Firefighters Charity’s, a 501(c)3 organization, that allowed the program to partner with local businesses to collect toys and donations to purchase the toys needed each year.
With the growing success of the program, requests for assistance from outside of Bullhead City began to pour in form other parts of the region. To serve this larger geographical area, in 2010 the Bullhead Firefighters Holiday Toy Drive was created to allow us to help children outside the Bullhead City Area. This was accomplished by partnering with Fire Department’s and other civic organizations located in Mohave County, Clark County, and San Bernardino County and assisting their already existing or struggling programs with donated toys and funds.
Beginning in 2012 the program teamed up with the Firefighter’s in Lake Havasu City and began to serve the children there as well. In the following years the program was further expanded to cover children in Desert Hills Fire District and Yucca Fire District, as well as assisting the Fort Mohave Mesa Fire Department and Mohave Valley Fire Department.
In 2017 the organization was restructured into the Firefighter’s Holiday Toy Drive, an independent 501(c)3 organization. This allowed the program to work with governmental and civic organizations to raise money and collect toys that can then be claimed as a Tax-Deductible Donation. It also gave us the ability to begin the consolidation of resources and logistics for all the toy Public Safety Toy Programs in Western Mohave county, with the goal of making sure that no child is left out during the holiday Season.
Working with the Salvation Army, beginning in 2018 we have consolidated the child application process for all the Public Safety programs in Western Mohave County. This simplified the sign-up process for families in need and streamlined the distribution of the families to the agencies who will deliver the toys. It will also allow us to minimize the instances of double dipping and potential fraud by having one list of families that are easily cross referenced with other assistance programs.
