Fire Out

Hello everyone, It's funny how life can change so abruptly and your whole world gets flipped upside down. So here's the story. I'm a soon to be thirty year old who has been working towards my career as a firefighter. As some may know it's no easy task. Literally thousands apply to have one person make it. Luckily I was there. I had everything I needed to get my career off and running and as luck would have it the littlest thing put an end to it all. On 03/26/16 I was headed to a friends house with a group of people and I had a fall on the road. Right away knowing something was wrong I stood up to assuming I had dislocated my elbow which had been a common injury of mine. As we got to my friends house I realized the pain was far worse than I could of imagined. Luckily I had some friends that were able to take me to the hospital to find that I had broken my proximal ulna which is your forearm right off my elbow. I was rushed into an a immediate surgery where the doctor eventually had to take out a part of my radius and connect my arm to my elbow with plates and screws. After waking up and speaking with the doctor and trying to see what my next step was, he had informed me that my firefighting career is in serious jeopardy. To go gain the strength I would need to get back into a department will take months to years. So with that sinking feeling I became a bit at a loss. I now have no idea what to do. I currently live in British Columbia without a real "support group." My family is from Ontario and they have suggested I move back to get the help I need. I have zero feeling in my arm and daily tasks take hours or all day. So the thought of moving back to Toronto where I need to find a new house, job and deal with bills almost seems like a nightmare. I don't even know where to start. My passion has for the time left me and I'm willing to fight every second to get back into the fire service but I need help. From physiotherapy daily, to gyms, moving across the country, medical bills; All with the hassle of living off my saving from my house fund is a nightmare. In addition to adding courses when Im fit to set myself apart yet again to firefight is scary. I'm looking for all the help I can get. Twelve to eighteen months is a very long time to be out of the fire service and every second Im not fighting to get back I'm loosing to everyone who shares my dream. Thanks for the read. All the best, Jamie
