Fight Childhood Hunger in NoVA
Organized by: Shelly Stoneman
EVENT DATE Jan 08, 2018
We are raising funds to support the creation of packs of food specifically designed for school-age children who are part of food insecure families living in Northern Virginia. Despite NoVA's reputation as one of the nation's wealthiest regions, we continue to have families that struggle to make ends meet and rely upon food banks and child-feeding programs to ensure that their kids don't go hungry. In fact, every day, up to 90,000 people--many of them children--go hungry in Northern Virginia. Children who attend school in particular will struggle to maximize their full potential as students when they are worried about how to stay nourished. Power Packs, which are a pre-packed assortment of two sets of nonperishable drinks, breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and dinners, provide students in need with meals to consume over the weekend. Most of the students served by Power Packs are in the free-or-reduced-meals program during the week, and are at risk of food insecurity and hunger on weekends. Our donations for Power Packs go primarily to support the charity, Food for Others (https://www.foodforothers.org/), but also the food pantry at our local elementary school. Food for Others relies on generous individuals and groups to donate food and funds to make this program possible. With the help of donations, Food for Others was able to provide over 65,000 Power Packs to 31 area elementary schools during school year 2017/2018 Please help us to increase this number in 2018 and beyond!
