Imagine losing normal use of a hand, arm, or perhaps not walking normally again just because of a fracture and not being able to get therapy because it is too far away. This is the reality for many people in the remote mountain communities we serve in southwestern Honduras.
The more we were confronted by this reality the more convinced we became that this should not be acceptable. But in order for the reality to change, something would have to be done about it. The answer? To open a home in Gracias, Lempira where people needing physical therapy could come and stay, accompanied by a family member, for as long as necessary, to receive the care and therapy required for them to recover as fully as possible.
La Casa de Rubén is exactly that. It is located near the foot of Mt. Celaque in Gracias, Lempira and not only is it the only project of it’s kind in southwestern Honduras, it Is unique in all of Honduras for two reasons. First, it is one of very few places dedicated specifically to assisting the disabled and injured of all ages who require physical therapy. Second, the only criteria for length of stay is the treatment each individual is prescribed. Some will stay for one or two nights while others will stay for weeks or months at a time.
But it is much more than just a place to stay. It is a comfortable and peaceful place. It is a place where community, fellowship and a sense of family exist. It is a place where people can experience God’s love and peace in a very real and personal way. It is a temporary “home away from home” where healing at all levels takes place.
