As many of you know, this winter I graduated from college, landed my first real job, and moved back to Washington, DC (yay)!!!! I've been working for the Fund for Global Human Rights since March, and it's been amazing to work for an organization that is doing such incredible work abroad. Here are some things about human rights that you might not already know, and how Fund grantees are working to solve these problems:

  • Children are still used as soldiers in many wars around the world. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Fund grantee BVES rescues and rehabilitates child soldiers so that they can return to their communities.
  • Tunisia just held its first elections since overthrowing their president in early 2011. Fund grantees around the country, mostly in newly-formed organizations, helped to educate people about the candidates and the importance of voting, and people turned out for the elections in record numbers.
  • In many countries, multinational corporations have displaced indigenous communities and signficantly degraded the environment in order to access natural resources like oil, rubber, and minerals. In Uganda, the National Association of Professional Environmentalists led coalition efforts that successfully protected communities’ environmental rights by stopping oil companies from building a refinery in the Kabowa wildlife reserve.

These are only some of the things that the Fund's grantees have done - in the last year! The Fund's grantees work on a wide variety of issues in several regions around the world, and the Fund's support - through both grants and organizational development - is crucial for the future success of these groups, and the human rights movement as a whole.

Please support the Fund for Global Human Rights in your year-end giving.
