Farmworker Recreation Project

Welcome back to my fundraising page!
This time, instead of being on the brink of starting my Student Action with Farmworkers' health fellowship, I am a few short weeks away from completing it. It's been an amazing journey, cliché as that might sound, but I'm not done quite yet.

Some of you may have heard, from me, from SAF, or other venues, that farmwork comes with its share of health risks and problems. Though the heat stress, the pesticide poisoning, the hypertension, the increased risk of STI's, are all very real threats, another health issue emerges the more we engage and talk with workers. That is mental health and stress.

By 2020 depression will be one of the most common non-communicable diseases in the world. As we all know, however, mental health is a topic that is easily missed or dismissed. Closer to home and the farmworker reality, I've witnessed daily how the isolation of these camps--often compared to prisons by the workers--can take hold of workers' mental health. That isolation, along with the inability to speak the language, possible abuse from employers, inability to leave the camps, worries about family back home, financial issues, general antipathy from the local community, and so many other factors take their toll on our workers. That stress and possible depression is often channeled into drinking and smoking, the only pastimes workers have apart from watching TV.

Because of this, the farmworker health program at the Surry County Health Department is trying to raise funds and ask for donations for sports equipment--soccer balls, volleyballs/volleyball nets, basketballs/basketball hoops--for our workers. Finding the time to exercise and try to stay health is difficult for workers, but many have said that in Mexico, they like to destress through different sports. Our goal is to make these resources available and this recreational program model has been successful in other parts of the state as well--more than counseling and group sessions in many cases. We've also considered art and/or music therapy, so if you have supplies for either, we welcome those, too!

So here is what you can do:

DONATE SPORTS EQUIPMENT (soccer ball, volleyballs/volleyball nets, basketballs/basketball hoops) or ART/MUSIC SUPPLIES

Either is very much appreciated! Please help us out! If you'd like to donate equipment, contact me at
