BENEFITING: COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE
EVENT: 12 Planes of Christmas 2016
THE STORY:
Fairchild J2K (UC-61) Unit: Old Dominion Squadron Location: Franklin, Virginia Progress: 80% Expected Completion: Spring 2017
SUMMARY
The important role the U.S. Coast Guard played in World War II battling German submarines at America’s doorstep is sometimes overlooked. This Fairchild J2K, also called a UC-61, is the only aircraft in the CAF to bear Coast Guard markings and tell their history.
HISTORY
Many Coast Guard aircraft were tasked with tackling the U-Boat menace, first on neutrality patrol, and later in combat. Young Coast Guard aviators in J2Ks armed with two 100-pound bombs, flew many missions off the east coast of the U.S. in the early stages of World War II.
PROGRESS
2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Coast Guard, and as part of her mission to commemorate this history, the Old Dominion Squadron's J2K Miss Cherie II has participated in several events alongside the modern-day Coast Guard, reconnecting "coasties" with their history.
TASKS AHEAD
The squadron is seeking a set of exhaust manifolds, and need to replace the tail wheel assembly to ensure several years' continued operation. In addition to replacement parts for Miss Cherie II, the Squadron is looking for support in building an exhibit for their hangar to tell the aircraft's Coast Guard history. Lastly, the squadron will honor the Coast Guard by re-marking the aircraft with the Coast Guard insignia specific to where Miss Cherie II and her fellow J2Ks were stationed.
VISION
The squadron is driven to tell the compelling story of those who served with the U.S. Coast Guard, to ensure that younger generations will still understand the vital role this military branch plays in defending our homeland.
