BENEFITING: Every Mother Counts
ORGANIZER: Every Mother Counts
It's that time of year again, Marathon training season in NYC, and because of a certain hurricane called Sandy I am back again, asking for your support for my run. Because of a certain someone called Grace, who happens to be my daughter, I might really not be here at all. Literally. Ten years ago October 23rd, I started to hemorrhage after I delivered her. Before that day I didn't know that hundreds of thousands of girls and women die every year from complications just like the one I endured and survived. Her birth was a rebirth for me and I have never looked at the world quite the same way.
Each day that I get to watch my daughter and son (born a few years later) grow, I am reminded of just how lucky I am and grateful to my birth team for all they did to care for me when my delivery got scary. However, 800 girls and women die each day because they don't have access to skilled providers let alone any maternity care during and after their deliveries. Often times, if there are providers or facilities, the monumental challenge mothers face in accessing healthcare services is distance. We started running the ING NYC Marathon in 2011 to educate others about this barrier of distance.
In many parts of the world 5k is the minimum distance a pregnant woman is expected to walk to access basic care, and 35k is an average distance a pregnant woman must travel to receive life saving care. It’s facts like these that prevent hundreds of thousands of girls and women from even thinking about seeking care until it's far too late. And that delay may cost them their lives. I am running this marathon to raise awareness and funds so that vulnerable mothers won't have to walk.
Ever since I learned about the millions of mothers and newborns whose lives are lost at birth I have dedicated my time and resources to elevating awareness and driving action to help end preventable deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth. Through donations from people like you and the support of dedicated partners, my organization, Every Mother Counts has been able to create a portfolio of grants that help fund programs all over the world that are improving maternal health and saving mothers’ lives.
