No parent should have to choose which of their kids go to school and which ones don’t. But that’s what’s happening in Gode village today.

My name is Katreena. After 8 medical missions in rural Ethiopia, Gode village named a school after me. It’s an honor that I’d like to share with you — because we’re better together.

What I saw was heartbreaking: there’s simply not enough room in the primary school for all the village kids. It’s not much better for the lucky ones. In the 4th grade, 170 children are crammed into a mud hut for 40 — jammed like sardines into 18 desks, no electricity, sharing 10 books for the whole class. Who can learn in those conditions?

About this project. The school will have 2 buildings, 4 classrooms each. And because there is no electricity, running water or sanitation in Gode village, we're developing systems for utilities, water, sanitation and restrooms — especially vital for girls as they enter pre-adolescence. This project will ultimately cost $100,000. To help us reach our goals, we’re doing it in four phases of $25,000 each.

Phase 3 – funding for STAR PROGRAM - summer school program resources - ONGOING

Love of learning starts in childhood. When kids love to learn, they stay in school. They help their families. They have hope. Together — through this project — we have the power to transform a child's life. When you transform a life, you transform communities, you change the world.

A positive learning environment can change the future. Gode high school — built by EHA Founder Dr. Gudata HInika and his wife Wubitu in 2010 — is proof. In just 4 years, it's already changed the lives of 2,500 graduates. But when kids can't even go to primary school, how could they make the leap into highschool?

Everything has a purpose. Upon completion of the new buildings, the old mud school rooms will be used for extra curricular activities, a library, a lunch room and a workshop.
