BENEFITING: Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge
EVENT DATE: Sep 28, 2014
Once again I am fundraising and participating in the Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge Walk for Hope. For more than 25 years, Mn Adult & Teen Challenge has been restoring hope to teens and adults struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. What sets Teen Challenge apart from other chemical dependency rehabilitation centers is that the cornerstone of the program is developing a relationship with Jesus Christ. This year I will be walking in memory of
Darron Luhrsen and Ryan Barnes. I was in Teen Challenge with both of them and
Darron was one of my best friends. Darron overcame more adversity in his short life than most of us could ever imagine. Darron was born 14 weeks premature addicted to Heroin and Cocaine. He went directly into foster care and was in 60 different foster homes, shelters, group homes, juvenile detention centers, ect. by the time he aged out of the system. The hardest thing for Darron to accept was that he never had a mother and father who were able to love him. However, the
Darron I knew had found the love he'd been missing in Jesus Christ and was one of the most compassionate, caring, and righteous seeking men I've known. Darron
had four amazing years because of Teen Challenge. Darron was a youth leader at Hosanna Church staying with the same group of boys for 3 years, He spoke in front of thousands of people sharing how Jesus had changed his life, he made the Dean's list 5 out of 6 semesters at North Central University, and he spent 3 weeks in Israel walking where his Savior did. Darron also met a beautiful woman, Erin Olsen, who loves the Lord like he did and they had a child, Chance. Despite not having his biological father around, Darron's son Chance will have a good life, because Darron found a woman who will be a good mother raising her son in the presence of his Almighty Father. Darron experienced some difficult times in late spring of 2013 and turned to alcohol out of desperation. On August 12, 2013
Darron drove his car into the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis while drunk, one week before his 27th birthday and a couple of weeks before his son's 1st birthday. I miss him very much, there was an unconditional love and friendship we shared that only God could have provided. As overwhelmingly sad as his death has been for many, the positive impact he had on so many lives in such a short time is much greater. Through the Faith I found in Teen Challenge I know; through the Word of God, through God's assuring voice in Prayer, and through Dreams and Visions of Darron without the sadness he seemed to carry in this life, that he is in peace spending his eternity with Jesus in the next.
So that's why I ask for your support this year, because I'm grateful for what Teen Challenge has done in my life and my friends lives. Because I believe this ministry as much as any resembles the ministry of Jesus Christ, reaching out to those who are broken and have lost all hope. Also because I want to honor the memory of my friend Darron. Don't feel obligated to give, just give if the Lord puts it on your heart.
