These are the faces of affordable housing in the D.C. region.
People like Lola, who as a result of domestic violence, ended up in the D.C. shelter system with her three daughters, ages 16, 10 and 7. In the shelter, they were out the door by 5:30 a.m. to get to school and so Lola could commute to Annapolis, Maryland, for work. “It was stressful,” she says, “and so frustrating not to be able to provide a stable home for my kids.”
As part of D.C.’s Rapid Re-Housing program, she was referred to East of the River Clergy-Police-Community Partnership. “We like living here,” Lola notes. “Everybody is happy.”
She now works a second job, in Hyattsville, Maryland, and is planning her family’s next move. “My goal is to find an apartment I can afford while working one job,” she says. “And, to not go back to the situation where I started.”
Low-income families in our region spend an average of 60% of their income on housing and transportation costs each month. Enterprise Mid-Atlantic is committed to preserving existing affordable housing and avoiding the unnecessary displacement for these struggling families and individuals.
The Enterprise Mid-Atlantic team works determinedly to make life better for people.
Working with our private and public sector partners, we provide financial and intellectual capital (dollars and sense!) to enhance affordable housing and educational life opportunities for residents in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia. Areas of focus include transit-oriented housing preservation/resident displacement prevention, faith-based development, educational enhancement and green/sustainable building.
To date we have invested over $1.9 billion to create or preserve 32,700 affordable homes. We have committed over $32 million grant dollars to support over 230 local development organizations. We have supported educational enhancement for 7,500 children.
We hope you'll join us in the fight for affordable housing by giving today!
