Our Goal: Open Doors will house 1,500 homeless individuals and families in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area over the next three years.
On any given night in Atlanta over 6,600 people are without a home, sleeping in a shelter or emergency facility, or staying on the street. A three-county survey of the metro area's shelters found a shortage of 1,700 beds for all homeless people, including children and youth.
Another 18,000 are spared that fate only because they have temporary lodging with a friend or relative, lodging that most often is crowded, stressful and not likely to last long. And, of those who do have housing, 20% are living paycheck to paycheck - an accident, illness or layoff away from experiencing the frightening reality of being without a home.
We believe the Open Doors program will be so successful in bringing the metro Atlanta region to "functional zero" in homelessness that it will serve as a model for jurisdictions across the country.
