BENEFITING: DUO DUO ANIMAL WELFARE PROJECT INC
Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project (DDAWP) is on the ground in China NOW, supporting local activists who are fighting against the brutal annual dog meat festival in Yulin, China. Volunteers are stopping trucks illegally transporting stolen dogs, working with local shelters to find homes for rescued dogs, funding the provision of food and medical care - including vaccinations and spay/neuter services, and documenting the horrific festival to spread the word about a practice that is both inhumane and unsafe. DDAWP is an all-volunteer animal welfare organization founded in 2013 to support the lawful efforts of animal welfare activists in China and Taiwan, and to strengthen the network between activists in China and Taiwan and those in the U.S. DDAWP's work in the U.S. has focused on raising awareness around the dog meat trade in Asia, rallying local Chinese-American celebrities around animal welfare issues, meeting with local officials to raise awareness around animal abuse in Chinese provinces that are "sister states" to U.S. states, and finding foster homes for dogs rescued from China and Taiwan. DDAWP's work in China and Taiwan has focused on bringing animal welfare programs into classrooms, training and supporting local activists to stop illegal dog and cat transports, supporting shelters that take in dogs and cats rescued from illegal transport, and working with lawyers and policymakers to formulate a viable strategy to promote animal welfare policy in China and Taiwan. DDAWP is funded entirely by donations, and run entirely by volunteers. In the two short years since its Executive Director formed the organization as a full-time volunteer effort, DDAWP has recruited a diverse and knowledgeable Board, obtained recognition from the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity, hosted the first annual U.S. conference on animal welfare in China and Taiwan, and garnered support from donors and volunteers across the U.S., as well as in Europe and Asia. It is named after the first dog rescued by its founder as a puppy in China, named "Duo Duo." Duo Duo was about to be sold to a butcher when she was rescued in 2012.
