BENEFITING: LEON COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY
EVENT DATE: Oct 22, 2017
As one of our most important annual fundraisers, makes the rescue and recovery of animals like Emily possible.
Emily is one of four dogs who came to LCHS all the way from a South Korean meat dog farm. Victims of the brutal dog meat trade, Emily, Scrappy, Daphne and Lex were frail shadows of dogs. Their physical and emotional scars ran as deep as their terror of the world around them.
As an emergency placement partner with the Humane Society of the United States, LCHS is regularly contacted regarding animals in urgent need of safe harbor. When we learned what Emily and the other dogs rescued with her had suffered, we knew that we couldn't turn them away.
None of the dogs had ever known love, comfort, or even a full belly and clean water. They came from a life in a hot, cramped box, and had absolutely no idea how to be a pet. While their malnutrition and various illnesses born of neglect could be healed with time and quality vet care, the mental and emotional damage suffered in their previous lives was far more complicated to address. In essence, they needed someone to teach them how to be a dog. Thanks to our foster program, we had just the people that Emily and the other three dogs needed. Each of their foster parents have patiently led the dogs step by step into their new lives. They've been taught everything from walking on a leash, to climbing stairs, to seeking touch and affection rather than fearing it.
Even now, Emily's foster mom is continuing to help her explore and learn to be comfortable in this brand new life. Emily has learned to play, to cuddle, to go to new places and meet new people with a confidence usually enjoyed only by dogs raised in a loving home. She is light years beyond the dog that had to be carried into the LCHS office because she was too terrified to move.
The younger dogs, Scrappy and Daphne, have found their forever homes. Both Lex and Emily have adapted more slowly than the puppies, but we're confident that they too will eventually find the right homes, and their new families will give them everything their early lives were lacking and so much more.
Your generosity makes it possible for us to help animals like Emily, Lex, Scrappy and Daphne. They might have come from further away than usual, but their story is fundamentally the same as so many of the abused, neglected and unwanted animals that find refuge and healing in our foster program.
Please to Emily's Walk & Wag: Humane Heroes team today to become a hero for animals in need and help us continue to make a difference for more like her.
