Electric Bolt for ALS
EVENT DATE: Jul 30, 2017
The Electric Bolt for Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) is an Ann Arbor running race sponsored and supported by the Electrical Training Alliance and their partners, including American Technical Publishers. The race and related events and activities raise money for Active Against ALS, a local 501(c)3 non-profit.
Active Against ALS is a grassroots, nonprofit organization whose mission is to raise funds for research toward effective treatments and ultimately a cure for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), while raising awareness of the disease, encouraging physical activity, and building a compassionate community.
Active Against ALS was formed by friends of Bob Schoeni, a beloved multi-sport volunteer coach of many of our kids, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2008. Thankfully, Bob and his family are STILL among our most reliable event volunteers and attendees! In response to this disease which takes away activity, we chose to encourage and become VERY active.
Active Against ALS has put on several dozen fundraising and awareness events over the years and donates all net proceeds to specific ALS research projects vetted by a scientific advisory board. In addition to running races like the Electric Bolt and Twinkie Run, Active Against ALS has put on an annual Boxcar Derby for kids, youth swimathons, a square dance, an annual Family Field Day, Beerfest, a barn party, a swim across the English Channel, Boston Marathon fundraisers, and more...
The Electric Bolt 5K and 8K races were created at the request of the Electrical Training Alliance in collaboration with the Ann Arbor Track Club and Active Against ALS. The races are timed to coincide with the week-long National Training Institute that brings thousands of electricians to Ann Arbor annually.
At the Electric Bolt, conference visitors from around the country join with local runners and supporters for a wonderful run or walk for a worthy cause.
