Update--Impact already seen at the Hawora School!

Our daughter, Bereket is 6. This fall she started kindergarten at our neighborhood school--beautifully renovated just last year with funds from the school levy. She has 23 friends in her class, a room full of books and supplies, state of the art technology, beautiful furniture and a bathroom attached to the classroom with a toilet just the right size for a kindergartener. They thought of everything.
Eight thousand miles away, in the Ethiopian village of Hawora, in the area where our daughter was born, there stands a neighborhood school that has not been beautifully renovated--and has no school levy posed to help them. At Hawora Primary School a typical class has 70 students who crowd into a room with broken furniture, worn out blackboards deteriorated walls and dusty dirt floors. The lack of teaching materials available for teachers and students is taking a toll on their quality of education: very few textbooks, no science supplies, and a shortage of sports equipment. Additionally, the school lacks vented toilets--instead they have pit latrines that are shared by boys and girls, posing hygiene and sanitation problems that further inhibit a healthy learning environment.
The good news is that the Hawora community is ready to transform their school into a learning environment that will change the lives of hundreds of children! Partnering with Roots Ethiopia, Hawora Primary School leaders and community members, we plan to reinvent a space that will become a hub of quality learning and community collaboration--something the community will feel ownership and pride of for years to come.
Our family is excited for the opportunity to partner with Roots Ethiopia and the Hawora community to: renovate classrooms, provide new desks, blackboards, text books, and science lab materials. We will raise funds so that restrooms with toilets--separate for boys and girls--can be built by the community! The children will be provided with hygiene education aimed at promoting practices that would help prevent water and sanitation-related diseases, as well as promoting healthy behaviour for future generations.
Please join us and help transform Hawora Primary School into a place where children are excited to learn and have access to learning materials that open their minds to all the world has to offer. Make your tax-deductible gift today and invest in this generation of children who have the potential to change the future of the community!
