I'm so honored to be running my 6th Boston Marathon in 2016, my first time with this AMAZING organization, in order to help girls from low-income situations all around the nation!
You may be thinking….if these girls are from low-income and disadvantaged situations, maybe we should be providing them food, books, or other necessities. Sports seem so frivolous. Let me tell you….sports are saving these girls’ lives! Sports and group activities are pulling these girls out of poverty and giving them a way forward. And also a respite from their home situations, at least during practices and games. I have now personally seen the impact Dream Big! has had on so many girls and believe so strongly in this cause. Meeting girls who came from tough situations and now, with the previous support of Dream Big!, they are attending college!! WOW!
Thank you so much for all of your support! Together, we can CHANGE LIVES!
Can you imagine playing on a girls basketball team and having to wait until the boys finished their game only to put on their sweaty uniforms so that you could play your game? THIS GOES ON IN THE US! Let's help girls get what they need in order to participate proudly in these activities that will increase self-confidence, improve self-worth and help build strong future female leaders in America!
Every day a girl in need steps on the playing field, court or track without the proper footwear, equipment, sports attire or training. Imagine trying to run the Boston Marathon with out the proper footwear or training. In April 2016 the Dream Big! Marathon Team, made up of 17 runners from around the world, will take to the start line of the Boston Marathon to help breakdonw the economic barrier that prevents thousands of girls from low-income situations from participating in sports and physical activities.
Dream Big! works to provide girls from low-income andhome less situations with the with the equipment, uniforms, athletic footwear, program fees, training expenses, sports opportunities and the supplies they need to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education and overall well-being.
Over the past four years Dream Big! has had a direct impact on more than 15,000 girls in need through equipment donations, program scholarships, sports clinics and the Dream Big! Leadership Conferences for middle and high school female athletes.
Unfortunately, poverty can severely limit a young girl’s involvement in sports. Dream Big! is working to breakdown the financial barrier that currently prevents girls from participating. Here are a few examples of the impact Dream Big! donations had this past year: Donated basketball sneakers and uniforms helped to support two girls basketball programs and a soccer team who use sports to help girls suffering with trauma and abuse; a donation of a volleyball net and equipment allowed a high school volleyball team to have their first home game in two decades; Dream Big! Program Scholarships sent girls to basketball and volleyball camp and other girls took dance lessons throughout the year; 150 girls attended their first ever Celtics basketball game; hundreds of girls attended Dream Big! Sports Clinics in partnership with local college sports teams and the Dream Big! Leadership Conference brought together 220 female athletes from economically disadvantaged communities with former collegiate and Olympic female athletes, now community and corporate leaders, to hear about the impact sports had on their lives and about the college and career opportunities available to them.
