Dragon Boat World Championships
EVENT DATE: Jun 21, 2015
So we can't see- whether due to blindness or a blindfold, BLINDSTART still wants to win. So each weekend we practice in Long Beach, California to hone our skills. Half the team is blind or visually impaired and half the team represents the blind community by being blindfolded during races. And this is not a relaxing "we're just out on the water race" This is let's dig deep, and let's win racing. Our goal is to compete in the World Championship Dragon Boat Races in Adelaide, Australia in March of 2016. And we need your help! Cost of equipment, renting the boats, insurance, transportation, race fees, lodging, etc. can be staggering, especially for those on fixed budgets like many visually impaired people. Sure they may be in school or learning a new career after losing their sight, but reality is in this economy it is tough to find employment if you are visually impaired. So what can you do? First, make a financial donation of any size - pick one of out paddlers who's story touches you, or give some to cover them all. Next you could introduce BLINDSTART to any companies that may benefit from a connection with our great passion of helping the blind cross finish lines. Thirdly, you could connect us with those who may help defray our costs - like airline big wigs, restaurant owners or athletic equipment manufacturers that may give us a gift in kind. We also raise scholarships for the Blind and Visually Impaired for education, adaptive equipment, transportation and career development so that they may live lives of independence. To accomplish our goal we first journey to the largest dragon boat race in North America, the Rio Tinto Alcon in Vancouver, British Columbia and home to the World Champion Visually Impaired Team (soon to be defeated.) on June 20/21. Next we can qualify at home at the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival July 18/19 and finally the Club Crew Championships in Washington State on August 1/2. Then, once that happens we are headed for more training to get ready for the World Championship Dragon Boat Races in Adelaide, Australia in March of 2016. Thank you for helping the blind cross finish lines!
