BENEFITING: National Kidney Foundation of Arizona
EVENT DATE: Feb 22, 2019
Jaya is a New York City girl who was born in New York, New York and spent her childhood in upstate New York. Some of her favorite childhood memories are of going to see Broadway musicals or the New York City Ballet. Although she trained in ballet and performed through high school, she hung up her pointe shoes in college to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. She graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, where she met her husband, Tom Gillespie. She stayed at Columbia to complete her residency in Internal Medicine and then moved to Arizona in 1998, where she and Tom have lived and practiced medicine ever since. Together, they are the proud parents of Maria Claire Gillespie, who is 10 years old.
Jaya is a Professor of Medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine and the Program Director of the Creighton University Internal Medicine Residency Program in Phoenix. She currently practices at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center, where she cares for patients with acute and chronic kidney disease, many of whom are uninsured and without resources. She is honored to be dancing in this year’s “Dancing with the Stars” event for the National Kidney Foundation, so that she can help raise money and awareness of the needs of patients with kidney disease in Arizona.
