To pursue a bold conservation agenda of protecting 20 percent of the ocean by 2020, Mission Blue has proposed a network of marine protected areas—called Hope Spots—which, leading ocean scientists agree, if fully protected and enforced, would form the basis for global regeneration of the ocean ecosystem from its current deplorable state.
Among its many projects, the foundation is supporting PRETOMA in Costa Rica, which is aggressively monitoring enforcement of local marine laws and has sued the government to stop the illegal plunder of hammerhead shark fins at the Cocos Island Hope Spot, an area Jacques Cousteau called “the most beautiful island on Earth.”
With every dollar you donate right now, The Philip Stephenson Foundation will donate another dollar to Mission Blue. Additionally, 20 percent of funds donated via TakePart will go to support PRETOMA’s work on the ground to protect hammerheads in the Cocos Island Hope Spot. The rest will go toward funding core Mission Blue initiatives, such as
Onboarding a New Hope Spot Partner to the Network ($500)
Sending Hope Spot Ambassadors to Petition Local Governments ($5,000)
Deploying a Hope Spot Scientific Expedition ($100,000)
