BENEFITING: The Eating Disorders Information Network, Inc.
EVENT: Merrick's Walk for EDIN 2015
EVENT DATE: Oct 25, 2015
I feel deeply passionate about this cause.
I've witnessed friends, loved ones and hundreds of therapy clients whose lives have been negatively impacted by eating disorders: not just anorexia or bulimia, but chronic dieting and binge eating. I've also seen people work hard to recover, reclaim their lives and go on to do amazing things.
There are so many myths and misconceptions out there:
"Only rich, white girls have eating disorders..." (Eating disorders impact males and females of all ages, races, religions, classes and sexual orientations)
"Eating disorders are just a phase." (Without treatment, they can be deadly)
"There's nothing you can do to prevent eating disorders." (Actually, there is a lot that can be done to understand the risk factors, intervene early and turn things around.)
and my least favorite joke:
"Gosh, I wish I could have an eating disorder for a couple of weeks!" (Would you wish to be clinically depressed for a few weeks? Alcoholic for a few weeks?)
For the past twenty years, EDIN has been doing good and important work in Atlanta and beyond. The many people who have devoted their lives to this cause as EDIN board members, volunteers, speakers and worker bees have made a huge impact in this community. They've shared life-changing stories and life-saving information.
Jane Fonda said it best at EDIN's first Gala: "People with eating disorders are not bad people. They are our best and brightest. They just want to be perfect."
Please walk (or donate) to help EDIN fight the good fight so we can help our best & brightest live the fulfilling lives they were meant to live~ XOXO
