The B-25J-30-NC SN 44-86758, now flying as "Devil Dog", was delivered to USAAF on June 26, 1945. The airplane was donated to the CAF in 1980. Many former Marines and those interested in preserving Marine history became involved in the initial restoration project.
According to U.S. Marine Corps legend, the "Devil Dog" term was coined by German soldiers to describe the Marines who fought in the WWI Battle of Belleau Wood. The Marines fought with such ferocity that they were likened to "Dogs from Hell."
Now, more than 70 years old, the Devil Dog is still working hard. Perhaps as a testament to the Marines the Devil Dog memorializes, the Dog and her volunteer crews possess a never-say-die attitude to keep the Dog flying. The Devil Dog is one of the most active aircraft in the CAF Fleet and one of the busiest B-25s in the world.
U.S. Marine PBJs are not a well-known part of history. The Devil Dog promotes keeping that piece of history alive. The VMB-612, the squadron the Devil Dog memorializes, was selected for special training in night attacks on enemy shipping, flying level about 300 feet above the water, using radar to locate and attack the targets. In addition to conventional bombs and torpedoes, 5-inch HVAR rockets were tried and found to be highly accurate and effective.
