Design [re] Build is a concept offering architecture students real life design and construction experience while saving a blighted property.
As any architecture student can attest, hands on experience with building out a project is not often explored through traditional architectural studies. Additionally, understanding that demolition is not always the answer on what to do with vacant and abandoned properties; Design [re] Build became one of our solutions. Presto!
CrowdRise funding will allow Kent State University (KSU), Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) and St Clair Superior Development Corporation (SCSDC) to turn this pilot project into a full-fledged program in 2015. With the nearing completion of our pilot Design [re] Build house, the collaboration now has the model from which to base our community engagement process, our timing for permitting, and our approach to design and to reuse of materials. In short, Design [re] Build has shown that creativity is the key to neighborhood stabilization and to Cleveland’s future as a vibrant city.
