The Des Moines Heritage Trust (DMHT) is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the preservation of historic buildings in the Des Moines, Iowa metropolitan area. Des Moines Heritage Trust will work with developers and nonprofit organizations to preserve those buildings that are difficult to preserve or find other solutions rather than demolition if possible.
Help us complete our first project, restoration of the 1909 historic East Des Moines Union Depot and establishment of the Des Moines Heritage Center.
The East Des Moines Union Depot will become a home for Des Moines’ nonprofit heritage organizations including the Des Moines Streetcar Friends, Des Moines Historical Society, Lost Des Moines, the Des Moines Rehabbers Club, Historic East Village, and others. The heritage organizations will be provided:
- Mailing address for organization;
- Shared office space when needed;
- Board room use;
- Event space for educational or cultural activities;
- Fundraising space; and
- Gallery and artifact display space for historical or heritage information.
The former depot will be known as the Des Moines Heritage Center and will feature a new building constructed next to it to operate as an events center. This center will be available for rentals and historical organizations to provide educational and cultural programming.
The Des Moines Heritage Center Events Center and the restored 1909 East Des Moines Union Depot will be available for rental for meetings, workshops, festivals, special events, and receptions. The anticipated events center rental income will be used to maintain and operate the restored depot and newly constructed events center and support a trust fund for preservation and restoration of historic properties in the Des Moines area.
