The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is a leading national organization focusing on mood disorders including depression and bipolar disorder, which affect over 21 million Americans, account for over 50% of the nation’s suicides every year, and cost $23 billion in lost workdays and other workplace losses.
DBSA offers peer-based, wellness-oriented support and empowering services and resources available when people need them, where they need them, and how they need to receive them—online 24/7, in local support groups, in audio and video casts, or in printed materials distributed by DBSA, our chapters, and mental health care facilities across America.
Through our extensive online and print resources and our nearly 600 support groups and more than 200 chapters, DBSA reaches millions of people each year with in-person and online peer support; current, readily understandable information about depression and bipolar disorder; and empowering tools focused on an integrated approach to wellness.
DBSA California is an affiliate of the national organization that focuses on the support network within the state. The majority of our 27 chapters are located in metropolitan areas like San Diego, the LA Basin, the San Francisco Bay Area, and near Sacramento. DBSA CA is peer-run by people with lived experience (both individuals and their loved ones).
DBSA focuses solely on depression and bipolar disorder. And helping others can aid people with mood disorders in building their confidence and maintaining their own mental health. All of our participants have the experience of living with or supporting someone with one of these diagnoses.
DBSA informs, empowers, supports, and inspires individuals to achieve the lives they want to lead. The lived experience of depression or bipolar disorder, which can often begin painfully and with debilitating symptoms, can ultimately provide people with diagnoses with unique insights and abilities to help their peers, as well as hope and inspiration.
DBSA is nationally recognized for our peer support specialist training services, our mental health advocacy work, our expansive peer support network, and as an expert on the subject of mood disorders. DBSA celebrates 35 years as a nonprofit organization in 2020.
DBSA provides leading-edge, interactive online peer support groups and resources. The Balanced Mind Parent Network (BMPN) is an online community where you’ll find connection, information, and hope for the road ahead. BMPN guides families raising children with mood disorders to the answers, support, and stability they seek.
DBSA is committed to creating and responding to opportunities to amplify the voices of those living with depression or bipolar disorder as a catalyst for change and to reduce stigma. Our organization advocates on behalf of these individuals to promote mental health and to address the challenges associated with mood disorders.
