The Story

A documentary theatre project exploring how depression affects families.

Erasing the Distance, a non-profit organization that sheds light on mental health issues through theatre, is creating a world premiere production that shines light on how depression affects entire family constellations.

The play, performed by some of the best actors in Chicago, will use the perspectives of multiple relatives to illustrate the multi-generational and life-altering impact of depression on an entire family.

We're particularly excited about this new production currently in development.  In ETD’s signature style, the stories will be brought to life in a docu-drama form, using the real words of the storytellers. However, with this project, we're very much breaking our monologue-only mold! The play will be shaped into an interwoven narrative with the assistance of playwright Gedalya Chinn, director Nikki Zaleski, and a collection of theater artists, graduate clinical psychology students, and other volunteers.

The process began with a series of three workshops, training students and volunteers on ETD’s methodology for story collecting and shaping. Script devising and development workshops were held throughout early 2014 and culminated with a reading of the piece. After receiving feedback from the reading, the creative team will now continue revising the script over the summer. Rehearsals will commence in the fall, and the world premiere public staging of the production will be in December 2014 at Theater Wit in Chicago!

Much of this project is very generously supported by The Rebecca Lynn Cutler Legacy of Life Foundation...but we still need you.  As you likely know, a project of this magnitude takes a significant amount of support. Your donation helps us a great deal!

Thank you in advance for being part of this vital initiative. We greatly appreciate your support as we work to disarm the stigma of mental illnesses like depression.
