In Her Shoes Challenge

BENEFITING: Casita Copan Inc

ORGANIZER: Casita Copan Inc

EVENT DATE: Oct 06, 2013

Mary Jo Nyssen

Our daughter Beth Ann is working with Casita Copan, and we are supporting this fundraiser to help the children while their mothers are working.  The moneys go to educate, and feed and clothe these children in a healthy environment.  Also it helps the moms so they can work, gain literacy, and it gives their children a safe and loving place to be while they are at work.

Can you feed yourself for one week with $21?

A single Honduran mother of Casita Copán makes $21/week, not nearly enough to meet even the most basic needs of her and her children. We challenge you to spend one week In Her Shoes.

Why take the In Her Shoes Challenge?

The minimum wage in Honduras is $63/week, but the majority of people don’t actually make this amount. Our mothers earn about $21/week, a wage that makes it nearly impossible to escape poverty. The point of this challenge is to create solidarity by connecting you to the experience of one of our mothers while raising as much money as we can for our Casita Copán families.

What is Casita Copán?

Casita Copán is a “home away from home” for at-risk children in Copán Ruinas, Honduras. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere with 65% of its population living in poverty, many of them children. Without proper care, these children are at risk for illiteracy, malnutrition, violence, disability, exploitation, and abandonment.

Casita Copán is dedicated to providing care for our community’s most vulnerable children. Our children’s center provides essential day care services to single moms living in poverty and supporting their families on their own. We believe that by supporting both mothers and children we can keep families together to help prevent the ills that stem from extreme poverty.

OK, I’m in! How do I do it?

1. Challenge yourself to only spend $21 on food and drinks from October 6-12. Obviously food already in your kitchen doesn’t count!

2. Create a page on Crowdrise. Invite all of your friends and family to join or donate. Remember the more money you raise, the bigger impact you make in the lives of our Casita Copán families. And the closer you get to winning an awesome surprise package direct from Honduras!

3. Spread the word! Talk about the In Her Shoes Challenge with people in your community. Tell people about it in your school, church, or workplace; host an event to inform people about the Challenge; hang up fliers in your local area to spread the word. Have fun and get creative!

Our Goal:

Where does your money go?

Your money will provide direct services to vulnerable women and children in Casita Copán’s community center, including:

- Nutritious meals

- Medical care

- Emergency health fund

- Educational classes for kids & moms

- Preschool Program

- Literacy classes for moms

- Jobs for local Honduran women

- Love, care, attention, and instruction to build a better future for our children

Our stretch goal:

So what happens if we reach our goal? Let’s keep going! If we raise an additional $5,000 we can implement our Women’s Well-Being Program, an initiative designed to address the root causes of chronic poverty. Through weekly sessions and classes, the Women’s Well-Being Program will focus on maternal and reproductive health, domestic and sexual violence support, literacy, self-esteem development, and life-skills education. This program will connect women to health services, maintain an “emergency fund” for medical emergencies, run a weekly support group for survivors of rape and domestic violence, offer literacy classes twice a week, and provide trainings focused on vital life-skills such as parenting, cooking and nutrition, healthy living, healthy relationships, money management, job readiness, home maintenance, and more. All classes will take place in the familiar setting of Casita Copán and free childcare and dinner will be provided to participating moms.

What You Get:

- During the seven days of the challenge, you will receive a story about one of our families as well as one traditional Honduran recipe to try out at home.

- The person who raises the most money for the In Her Shoes Challenge will receive a surprise package filled with treasures from Honduras.

-You get to experience the newest weight loss trend, the $21 diet!

When can you start fundraising?
