Deafblind Trek and Documentary
EVENT DATE: Jul 28, 2014
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Jul 20, 2014
We are taking the first group of deafblind people and some deaf, blind and hearing people who will be simulating being deafblind (by wearing goggles and earplugs), up to Machu Picchu in Peru South America to feel the ancient spiritual Inca ruins.
We thought it would be a good idea to capture this on film to help raise awareness about deafblindness and the common myth 'that you are better off dead than deaf and blind'. We will also be taking a team of volunteer Communicator Guides (aka human guide dogs) to support and work with our deafblind trekkers. We have an inclusive team from round the world including USA, UK, Africa, Australia with hearing, deaf, blind and deafblind people involved.
We are being led by Father Cyril Axelrod, the only deafblind priest in history who is 71 years old, speaks 15 languages and travels the world teaching and training people about the 'gift of disability' and developing services for disabled people. We plan to launch a new organisation in his name at the top of Machu Picchu...and pop some bubbly to celebrate!
