THE STORY:

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We’ve been blown away by your support, generosity, and enthusiasm for our dream of publishing the first bilingual collection of LGBTQ Korean American stories. Originally, we set our goal at $7,000. This is the bare minimum we needed to raise in order to fund a first printing of the Dari Project’s collection of stories. In just 11 days, we reached our goal of raising $7,000 towards a first printing of 500 copies of our publication.

We couldn’t have done this without you! Your support has inspired and re-energized us to see this project through to publication after years of work to make this happen. Given the tremendous outpouring of support from our friends, family, community members, and allies, we hope that you’ll help us continue to spread the word about Dari Project and help us raise an additional $3,000-$5,000 through our CrowdRise campaign to ensure that our project has a greater impact in the Korean American community.

Raising an additional $3000-$5000 will allow us to:

  • Increase the first printing of this publication from 500 to 1000. More copies of this collection can be given to people like Korean American teenagers coming out who do not see experiences like theirs represented in mainstream LGBTQ resources.  More copies can reach immigrant Korean parents with limited English proficiency who are struggling to come to terms with having LGBTQ children.
  • Absorb most, if not all, shipping and handling costs to ensure we reach as many LGBTQ Korean Americans and their family members as possible.
  • Dedicate some of our budget towards publicity and marketing efforts to increase visibility of our publication and expand the reach of Dari Project’s mission.
As a small, volunteer-run, grassroots organization managed entirely by community members with full-time jobs, full-time school, and many other commitments, we rely entirely on individual donors like yourselves and could not have done this without you.  We cannot express our gratitude enough.

Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you!

Warmest regards,
The Dari Project

My personal story:

I came out to myself as a Senior in High School & came out to my 어머니& 아버지 (parents) as a Sophomore in College. I am deeply grateful for all the people who have helped me along the way to put words, courage & resources to my life and journey as a Queer/Lesbian Korean American woman.

Dari Project was created to provide support, resources & visibility to LGBTQ Koreans, Korean Americans, Korean Adoptees, & people of Korean descent. Too often we hear from LGBTQ Korean community members who tell us about the stigma, difficulty, anguish, isolation and rejection that come from within our own families, neighbors, church/religious leaders and overall Korean community. Dari Project's collected stories hope to humanize the diverse lives of LGBTQ Koreans and the impact and importance that family and acceptance have in our lives. We celebrate the diverse stories of LGBTQ Koreans and the brave, loving and accepting families and allies who have supported and advocated for us.

Please help us in completing our project to publish our 27 bilingual English & Korean personal stories. You have the chance to make a difference in someone’s life. Please join us in this journey/dream to make our publication come true.

Thank you for your generosity and support.

With love,

Un Jung

***************************************************************************************************

Dari Project is a volunteer-led, grassroots organization that develops resources to increase awareness and acceptance in Korean American communities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people of Korean descent. By documenting and sharing the life stories of LGBTQ Koreans, we seek to build bridges among Korean American families, social  networks, institutions and faith communities.

Since its inception in 2005, the Dari Project leadership has dreamed of publishing the first collection of personal narratives of LGBTQ Koreans as a bilingual resource for LGBTQ Koreans and their friends and families, and we're so close to making this dream a reality!

We've solicited 27 stories from members of our community, which represent multiple experiences, including homo/bi/transphobia in Korean American communities, coming out as an LGBTQ person, building relationships with family, and membership in faith communities.

Thanks to some friends and supporters we’ve been able to get started but we need your help to publish this collection as a bilingual print resource for our community. Your generous contributions will help edit, translate, design, and print our stories this summer.  If we can make our goal of $7000, it will help make this book available for FREE to your friends, families, communities, and people you care about.

THE DEADLINE IS NOV. 30, SO PLEASE MAKE YOUR TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION TODAY.

- ALL DONATIONS are tax deductible through our fiscal sponsor, API Family Pride.

- ALL TRANSACTIONS are safe and secure.  Alternatively, you can send checks to our fiscal sponsor with a memo written to Dari Project:

But most importantly, providing your friends, family members and allies with FREE copies of the publication to share.
