Alpaugh and Allensworth are both underserved rural communities located in the southwest corner of Tulare County in the southern half of the great Central Valley of California. Though the Southern Sierras are within view from both Allensworth and Alpaugh, children from disadvantaged rural communities are not often afforded opportunities to explore places outside of their immediate area. For many of Allensworth and Alpaugh 4th graders this will be their first experience not only outside of the valley floor but also in a national park. The 45 4th grade students will be going on a field trip to Sequoia National Park for an entire school day. The children will be taken on ranger guided educational tours of several locations within the park where they will learn about redwood forest ecology and land stewardship. Living in the heart of the lower watershed the Allensworth and Alpaugh 4th graders will now be able to explore their upper watershed, creating a “hands on” connection of the vital relationship between the two. All funds raised from our Every Kid in a Park event will go towards transportation for the students from the valley floor into the Sierras and home again.
