EVENT: Team Running Strong 2016 MCM
EVENT DATE: Oct 30, 2016
Dad was proud to have served as a US Marine, and as I grew older this has had a profound impact on me. Dad was also a lifelong advocate of Native culture and spent the better part of his life promoting, teaching, and participating in powwows and cultural events. This was our life growing up. Over the last several years, I have run many races supporting various military causes and charities. After my first, and only, marathon (in 2014) I said "never again!" (perhaps with slightly more colorful language at the time!). However, I have heard so many wonderful things about the Marine Corps Marathon I decided that IF I were to ever contemplate another marathon this would be the only one I would consider. When I learned Team Running Strong was a charity partner with MCM I felt the confluence of these two influential forces, and decided that this was the year to run. Running Strong helps American Indian people meet their immediate survival needs while creating opportunities for self-sufficiency and self-esteem in American Indian youth. I run for Dad, I run for all the Native American children who will benefit, I run for those who can’t, and I run for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country including SGT. Joshua Ashley (KIA 7-19-2012 Afghanistan).
