The “WHY”…..I’m one of the “lucky ones.” I was a young woman, a mother of 3, a wife, a friend, a busy professional, when I heard the words “you have cancer.” I was diagnosed with stage 2 vaginal cancer and endured some of the toughest cancer treatments that exist, yet I still consider myself very lucky. My treatment was close by, my medical team was well trained and used state of the art equipment.

Not every woman diagnosed with cervical and vaginal cancers is as lucky. In fact, the vast majority of the 500,000 women diagnosed with cervical cancer every year live in resource-poor countries. This means that a cancer that is nearly 100% preventable is still the leading cause of death for women in these countries. The nearest clinics may be hundreds of miles away and many medical professionals are not trained nor do they have the equipment to treat cancer early and quickly, which can mean the difference between life and death.

Lying on the radiation table in the midst of my own cancer treatment, feeling incredibly low and fatigued, I made an important choice: I was going to do whatever I could to prevent other women from experiencing this same horrible disease. I assembled a team of 8 adventurers and warriors for the cause, including my own gynecologic oncologist, to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with me and help relieve the burden of cervical cancer in that region.

We are climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro for CureCervicalCancer.org. Their “clinic in a suitcase” provides women in some of the most remote areas of our world access to life-saving low-tech treatments. There currently is no clinic in Moshi that treats cervical precancers.
