THE STORY:
TCS NYC Marathon - Why am I Running?:
I have been involved in the Connecticut Challenge, now Mission, ever since I was six years old. Throughout those 11 years, I have learned what a major impact that just one organization can have on the world. As I have grown up, I have learned how cancer has touched each and every one of us in different ways. I have also seen what detrimental effects the disease can have on those who face a battle against cancer, those who support cancer patients throughout their battles, and those who both mourn the loss and carry on the legacy of those who have lost their battles to cancer. Ever since my first CTC bike ride I have dreamed of making a difference in the lives of cancer survivors, patients, and their families, which is what Mission strives to do on a daily basis. Recently, within the past 3 years, I have discovered my passion for running. I decided to run the NYC marathon to both support an organization that I truly believe in, and to prove to myself that with perseverance and hard work, anything that may have seemed impossible in the past is possible. Throughout the months of training leading up to this year's run on November 5th, I will be working with Mission to raise money for those who are unable to run the race along with me, as they continue to fight their battle against a disease, cancer, that continues to affect millions of people each and every day.
How has cancer affected me?
As I have grown up, cancer has become a word that is heard more and more throughout everyday life. In just my family alone, more than 8 people have been diagnosed and fought against cancer. Besides my family, numerous friends of ours have battled courageously against the disease. My mother, Kate Lieder has fought two battles against cancer which have been a major inspiration in my decision to run the New York City Marathon. Seeing her strength and courage she used to stand up to the disease taught me that anything is possible, and keep me motivated on the path to crossing the finish line of my very first marathon.
What is Mission?
MISSION exists to inspire everyone who has stared down cancer, to elevate expectations and equip them with the game-changing exercise, nutrition and mind-body knowledge, tools and community needed to activate any plans, dreams and potential to "live. life. vibrantly."
The programs delivered under the CT Challenge umbrella were renamed Mission this year to better communicate their role as the flagship for survivors everywhere. Our commitment to use these programs to equip all who battle cancer with the exercise, nutrition and mind-body knowledge, tools and community needed to "live. life. vibrantly." remains unchanged.
Thank you so much for all contributions! Any amount will make a big difference in the lives of those affected by cancer!
