April 17, 2016
BENEFITING: Crohn's & Colitis Foundation
ORGANIZER: Crohn's & Colitis Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I am so excited to run the NYC Marathon and have the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for a great cause. My son Michael, who is now 20, was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at age 10. It is a chronic disease without a cure.
He endured many doctors appointments, medical procedures, and was repeatedly misdiagnosed. The disease does not typically affect young children so the pediatrians discarded his symptoms to be the result of the latest stomach virus. His first GI doctor at age 9 treated him for anemia and diagnosed him with Irritable Bowel Syndrom (IBS). We continued to visit specialist after specialist until we finally found a GI doctor who diagnosed him with Crohn's disease. However by this time the scar tissue grew to the point where numerous emergency room visits were required. At age 11 he had to have surgery and the result was very good. He could finally eat and grew 6 inches in 1 year!
I'm hopeful that awareness and research will prevent other young children to be misdiagnosed and suffer without treatment. I truly appreciate any donations as every dollar will contribute to the cause!
