BENEFITING: Crohn's & Colitis Foundation
ORGANIZER: Crohn's & Colitis Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I will be running the NYC marathon on November 6, 2016 with Team Challenge to raise funds for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (www.ccfa.org).
CCFA’s mission is to find a cure for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which are chronic, autoimmune illnesses that cause inflammation in the digestive tract.
I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age 13. Fun times. What followed was a series of ups and downs: hopitalizations, loads of medications, side effects, periods of remission and ultimately the discovery of stage 1 colon cancer and a re-diagnosis of Crohn’s disease. After a life-saving surgery 10 years ago to remove my colon, I was able to bounce back (thankfully cancer-free) and live a relatively normal, active life. Now 28 years after my initial diagnosis, I still deal with Crohn's symptoms every day. But I’m one of the luckier ones and thanks to great doctors, surgeons and nutritionists, I’m able to manage my symptoms do all the things I want to do, like running a marathon, under the right mix of medications, supplements and diet. Others are not so lucky. IBD affects 1.6 million Americans – some a lot worse than others, in and out out of hospitals unable to run, play, work or go to school –and there is no known cause or cure.
As I train to run 26.2 miles, I ask your help raising funds for CCFA as they strive to cure and prevent Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis through research and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected. More than 80 cents of every dollar donated goes to mission critical programs to support this effort.
Thank you in advance! Your donations (tax-deductible), support and well wishes are greatly appreciated!! And if you're in NYC on November 6th, please come cheer me on!
