Children with severe facial deformities suffer complications. However the worst complication is bullying.
Children like Joshua are being bullied and feel they don't have any value. He needs surgery to reconstruct his skull which would remove the bump on his face. It is a very invasive surgery but it will improve his quality of life.
"Neither of these is good. Mark's important issues are the hydrocephalus and the patent foramen cecum. Josh's encephalocele (assuming it's an encephalocele and not just a meningocele) means that his brain is pouching out into the back of his nose. To say which is worse is tough cause we don't know how bad Mark's hydro is. If it's really bad, he could die. But if it's kinda mild and chronic, he'll be uncomfortable but fine until he gets his vp shunt. Josh prob has no hydro, but he could easily get infected (ie encephalitis), which would also be really bad. Basically, Mark is worse off if his hydro is bad. Neither of these conditions is compatible with a normal life span if not corrected surgically. The patent foramen cecum is probably no big deal unless it's a big defect or he's had meningitis from it. Then it's also bad. All of these conditions need to be repaired as soon as possible to avoid the complications of meningitis, encephalitis, and the sequela thereof (which include death). If the hydro is bad on Mark, he'll herniate (long explanation) and die. But that's prob not the case, or he wouldn't have made it to 4 years old."
