Every child deserves committed, loving, dedicated parents.

Children from father-absent homes are more likely to live in poverty, suffer from abuse or neglect, become pregnant as a teen, and endure a host of other risks. Children in father-absent homes are:

Four times more likely to be poor. In 2011, 12% of children in married-couple families were living in poverty, compared to 44% of children in mother-only families.

At a higher rate of poverty a risk factor for abuse. 30% of children in Jackson county live in poverty, and 53% of students are eligible for free/reduce price school lunches. The CPCAN is located in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Jackson, the majority of parents attending CPCAN’s Free Parent Education classes are 200% below the poverty level.

CPCAN Who We Are and What We Do:

In 1977, a small group of concerned citizens came together to organize the Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, CPCAN, in an effort to improve the safety, health, and well-being of children in Jackson County. In 1981 CPCAN received 501(c) (3) status and for over 35 years has been committed to educating and strengthening our community to insure healthy child development and reduce child maltreatment. The CPCAN is the only agency in the county whose sole mission is prevention. For over three decades CPCAN has provided the community with programs and educational opportunities to protect children, and has strived towards the vision that all children receive the great childhoods they deserve - because our children are our future!

CPCAN strives to protect all children, and to make our community a safe, loving, and nurturing place in which they may grow up to their full potential. We do this through a variety of programs:

Free Parent Education classes and workshops
Stewards of Children training – a prevention program that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.
Presentations and educational information on:
Safe Sleep – how to protect infants from sleep related death
Period of PURPLE Crying – a program to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome
Mandated Reporter Trainings – train adults who work (and volunteer) with children how to recognize and report suspected abuse and neglect to Child Protective Services
Professional Development Trainings – provide educational opportunities for professionals who work with children and families to strive for prevention, and to expand skills and understanding for effective treatments and responses to child maltreatment
Collaborations with community partners which include truancy prevention, the coordination of the Jackson Family Expo, and participation in community events such as the Community Baby Shower, Kids’ Fest and more
Production and distribution of child safety and parent education materials to the community

In 2014 the CPCAN served over 2,800 community members to help protect and nurture the children of Jackson County.
