EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
On April 20, 2015 I will be running in the 119th Boston Marathon - my first marathon! I am honored and privileged to be running for "Cops For Kids with Cancer,” a 501C3 charity that supports families with children diagnosed with cancer. http://copsforkidswithcancer.org/
Last year it was estimated that 15,780 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 years would be diagnosed with cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. The diagnosis of cancer alone can take a huge emotional toll on these children and their families, never mind the long road ahead of hospitalizations and treatments. Although research has improved survival rates, these children face long term side effects from treatment requiring ongoing care.
As a pediatric nurse, I have witnessed some of the struggles these families and children face. The parents that leave their jobs and lose a vital income to stay at their child’s bedside for weeks. The families that pack up and move across the country, away from their relatives to receive the best care for their child. Families take multiple trips into and out of the city day after day, paying for parking fees, hospital meals, and that morning or late night cup of coffee to keep them going. All the burdens they face, never mind the health insurance that does not cover specific treatments.
I am running for all the brave children who continue to persevere despite the uphill battle they face in the hospital day after day. I am running for the families that give up everything to stay at their child’s side through every treatment, every procedure, every lab draw, every day. I am running because my job as a nurse does not end when my shift is over. I want to give back to the families and children that have molded me into the nurse I am today. I am running for Cops For Kids with Cancer to support these families and children in their time of need.
CFKWC has raised more than $1,400,000 in the last 4 years that has gone to numerous families around New England. My goal is to raise $10,000 and be able to help families in need. Please consider donating to this wonderful organization!
A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to all of YOU for taking the time to visit my page and making a donation! I know we are going to put a smile on a lot of faces come April 20th and I promise I will make you all proud. SEE YOU AT THE FINISH LINE!
