BENEFITING: NEXT GENERATION OF SERVICE
EVENT DATE: Jan 14, 2017
As a country, we are emerging from one of the most divisive presidential campaigns in United States history. And we now face a choice between coming together to listen to each other’s perspectives, and create a country for everyone, or shutting differences out and furthering divides along racial and socio-economic lines. If you believe that now is a time to come together, then national service will be one of our biggest allies on this path. National service facilitates opportunities for young people from across the country to serve people of different backgrounds, to learn about their struggles and understand their views. Gina, for instance, came to NGS “hoping to learn more about what organizations are promoting change in low-income communities and how [she] could get involved with them.” After one session with an NGS guide, she eagerly applied to an AmeriCorps position at the Neighborhood Partnering Program. Before her first interview, Gina’s NGS guide gave her tips to shine during the process, and twenty minutes after the interview she got a call congratulating her on the position. The slogan for the Neighborhood Partnering Program that Gina will be a part of is, “Empowering Neighborhoods, Building Community” – exactly what we need right now. Gina is one of nearly 200 students who signed up for a one-on-one session with an NGS Guide this year and one of over 40,000 students who used our online resources. In the last few weeks since the election, we have seen an even greater increase in student sign-ups as more young people realize the importance of making a difference and rebuilding communities. To meet this increased need, NGS will continue to expand our online resources and offer one-on-one sessions to over 500 students in 2017. Will you help us bring communities together by donating today?
