CMA (Civic Music Association of Des Moines) has been providing the central Iowa community with world-class classical and jazz music experiences since 1925. In that time, we have presented over 500 concerts and provided unique music education experiences to tens of thousands of young people.
Recent artists include GRAMMY award winner Esperanza Spalding, the Emerson String Quartet, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Poncho Sanchez, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, Joe Lovano, and many others.
CMA participates in many partnerships to enhance its impact in the community. Concerts are typically held at Drake University’s Sheslow Auditorium and at Hoyt Sherman Place. Also, in the past few years we have presented concerts at the Des Moines Public Library, Des Moines Social Club, Des Moines Arts Festival, Johnston Commons, Cowles Commons, Wooly’s and Music Under the Canopy at Brenton Skating Plaza.
CMA engages all of its jazz and classical artists in CMA Studio music education programs. Accessible and diverse education and community outreach is an integral part of our mission. All CMA Studio programs are offered at no cost and benefit students, families and the general public. We make a special effort to target low-income students, at-risk youth and families in the Greater Des Moines area. Examples of CMA Studio programs include onsite workshops in schools and community centers, master classes, special performances, artist talk back series, free/discounted tickets to student groups and music teacher curriculum development.
CMA also manages the Belin Quartet, which presents a series of ten free concerts downtown and travels to area elementary schools for free in-school programs.
