BENEFITING: Every Mother Counts
On October 9th I will be running the Chicago Marathon for Every Mother Counts. Since I founded Every Mother Counts in 2010 I have put in thousands of miles to raise awareness and funds to improve maternal health to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for more mothers. When I started training for my first NYC marathon back in 2011, I had no idea that I would still be running today. Since then I have finished five full marathons, nine half marathons and one 24 hour relay race! Last year, I ran my fastest marathon yet in London and ran the Boston Marathon this year. This is my second Chicago marathon and my second marathon in 2016.
Why I run, Had I not had the care I received the day I became a mom, I would not have the opportunity to experience the wonder and joy of raising my own two children today. A woman dies every two minutes bringing life into the world and WE have the power to change that. 98 percent of global maternal deaths are preventable. With access to education, transportation and supplies we can greatly reduce the number of preventable deaths that occur during and after delivery.
Why Chicago, Maternal Mortality is on the rise in the United States. In fact, we are one of just 13 industrialized countries with a rising maternal mortality rate despite the fact that we spend more per capita on healthcare than any other developing nation.
- Over 28% of deliveries in Chicago are by C-section - far higher than the WHO recommended rate of 5-15%. (March of Dimes)
- Over 15% of delivering women in Chicago received prenatal care deemed “inadequate” by the March of Dimes. (March of Dimes)
- Less than 61% of black women and 62% of Native American women in Chicago receive adequate prenatal care, compared with 86% of white mothers, 79% of Asians, and 74% of Hispanics. (March of Dimes)
With your support, more women will have the opportunity to enter motherhood safely and when that is possible, more families will thrive.
There are many ways to show your support on race day. If you are in the area, you can come out to cheer me on. You can also purchase an EMC t-shirt or sweatshirt from our running apparel partners at Oiselle.com where 40% of each EMC item will go toward funding our grant portfolio.
